  • Water quality for alkaline water electrolyser (AWE)

HySynergy I 20MW is one of the largest green hydrogen production projects in Europe, led by Everfuel. The hydrogen produced is supplied to the nearby refinery in Fredericia, providing zero-emission fuel for mobility and industrial partners.

The HySynergy I project uses alkaline water electrolysis (AWE) technology, which requires a steady supply of 4500 liters per hour of ultrapure water with conductivity below 5 μS/cm.

The water treatment solution at the HySynergy facility consist of softening by ion exchange and double-pass RO.

Water Treatment Steps

Water intake is city water free of chlorine that has already undergone aeration and sand filtration. With a particular focus on metal ions and organics, the quality level of the make-up water could be met by the following water treatment steps:

  • Ion exchange softening as a pre-treatment for the reverse osmosis system to avoid fouling and limescale deposits in the membranes
  • Membrane filtration with a double-pass reverse osmosis system, where ions and organic substances are removed from the water, resulting in demineralised water with low conductivity.
  • CO2 removal by chemical dosing

By 2030, the HySynergy project aims to ramp-up green hydrogen production to 1 GW.

No hydrogen without water

The transition to green energy is not just about production; storage and distribution are equally important. ‘Green hydrogen’ production meets this challenge. And water plays a crucial role in this process.

Hydrogen production involves moving and treating large amounts of water to meet requirement for makeup water, refinement loops, ultra-pure water treatment or cooling process applications. Our water technology expertise helps you move and treat water in the right way: reliably, sustainably and cost-efficiently.
